Fresh details have emerged about the unannounced remake of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag, according to a new report.

French outlet Jeux Vidéo Magazine, known for accurate Ubisoft scoops in the past, claims to have spoken with multiple anonymous sources familiar with the project.

Expected Release Window

Sources indicate the remake is currently aiming for a March 2026 release. However, at least one insider expressed doubts about hitting that target due to the remaining workload.

Development Team

Ubisoft Singapore is reportedly leading development. The studio previously contributed to the naval gameplay in the original Black Flag and later developed Skull and Bones. Additional support is expected from Ubisoft Bordeaux (lead studio on Assassin’s Creed Mirage) and Ubisoft Belgrade.

Gameplay and Content Changes

The remake is said to trim certain present-day sequences from the original game, replacing them with more pirate-era content. This approach is expected to make the final game longer than the 2013 version, with roughly four hours of additional content.

One notable addition is a new section featuring the character Mary Read, which was cut from the original release.

The report also claims the remake will introduce deeper RPG mechanics, similar to recent Assassin’s Creed titles. This includes enhanced inventory and loot systems, along with expanded combat, weapon stats, and equipment customization.

Other improvements include:

  • Removal of loading times to allow seamless sailing across the map (a feature already present in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey).
  • Expanded content on smaller islands, which originally offered very little beyond a chest or two.

Technical Details

The project is not planned as a full ground-up remake in the style of Resident Evil 2 or Resident Evil 3, nor is it a basic remaster. It will run on the latest version of Ubisoft’s Anvil engine — the same used for Assassin’s Creed Shadows — delivering improved visuals over the original while not pushing current-generation hardware to its absolute limits.

Voice Actor Hints

Ubisoft has not yet officially confirmed the remake’s existence, despite rumors circulating for nearly two years. Earlier in 2025, voice actor Matt Ryan (who portrays protagonist Edward Kenway) sparked speculation at conventions. He hinted at the project to a fan before later stating he could not comment further due to legal threats from Ubisoft.
