Microsoft has officially pushed back the release of Fable to 2026, giving Playground Games more time to refine the highly anticipated reboot. The news was confirmed by Xbox Game Studios head Craig Duncan during the latest Xbox podcast.

Fable Delayed for Quality Improvements

Originally slated for a 2025 release, Fable will now arrive in 2026. Duncan reassured fans that the extra time will be worth the wait. “We’re really excited about the progress Playground Games has made,” he said. “We previously announced Fable for 2025, but we want to give it more time, and now it will launch in 2026.”

Alongside the delay, Microsoft showcased new Fable pre-alpha gameplay, offering a glimpse into the world of Albion as envisioned by Playground Games.

Playground Games’ Vision for Fable

Duncan praised the studio’s track record with the Forza Horizon series, highlighting its ability to deliver stunning visuals and engaging gameplay. “Playground is bringing the humor, world-building, and signature British charm of Fable to life, creating the most beautifully realized version of Albion we’ve ever seen,” he added.

To support development, Playground Games is also collaborating with Eidos Montreal, the studio behind Guardians of the Galaxy (2021).

Fable to Launch on Game Pass

Despite the delay, Fable remains a major Xbox exclusive and will be available on Game Pass for Xbox and PC from day one. First announced in June 2024, the reboot is one of the most anticipated RPGs in development.

With an extended timeline, Playground Games aims to ensure Fable lives up to the legacy of the beloved franchise, delivering a polished and immersive experience when it finally launches in 2026.
