Business journalist Christopher Dring highlights the financial trade-offs for games included in the Xbox Game Pass subscription service. According to Dring, titles featured in Game Pass can see an estimated 80% decline in their projected premium sales on Xbox, while multi-platform games might experience a surge in PlayStation sales.
Game Pass Sales Impact on Xbox Titles
During a Q&A session on the InstalBase forums, Dring exagerrated on how Game Pass influences game sales. He stated:
“Anecdotally, games that are in Game Pass can expect to lose around 80% of its expected premium sales on Xbox. That’s the figure that gets thrown around. It’s less if it’s a big mainstream release, but generally… look at how low Hellblade 2 charted. Or where Indiana Jones came. Or even Starfield. Game Pass clearly hurt sales of those titles on Xbox.”
Dring noted that while big-name titles may fare slightly better, overall premium sales still suffer significantly. However, multi-platform games included in Game Pass may see unexpected benefits on rival platforms:
“But… if it’s a game on multiple platforms, it can be beneficial. That surge in players on one Xbox can have a strong impact on sales on PlayStation, for instance.”
The Subscription Model
Dring expressed mixed feelings about the effectiveness of subscription services, emphasising how it varies by game genre and audience:
“Try being an indie game on Xbox right now that’s not on Game Pass…”
Despite the challenges, subscription models can also provide unparalleled exposure in today’s crowded gaming market:
“But also, getting people to play your game in 2024/2025 is so, so, so hard. And subscription gets games in front of lots of people.
We know from data that there are a lot of people that only play Call of Duty. And if some of those people decided to get Call of Duty this year via Game Pass, and those very same people took the opportunity to play some other Game Pass games, games they wouldn’t have otherwise played… it’s hard to argue that’s a bad thing.”
Declining Revenue in the UK Gaming Market
This discussion comes amid reports of a declining video game market in the UK. In 2024, video game revenue dropped by 4.4% to £4.6 billion, driven largely by a sharp 35% decrease in physical game sales, which generated just £324.4 million.
While subscription models like Game Pass present opportunities for broader player engagement, they also pose significant challenges to traditional sales models. Developers must weigh the trade-offs carefully when considering inclusion in subscription services.
