Elden Ring Sequel isn't happening, and here's why!

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the director of Elden Ring and president of From Software, recently shared that the studio is not currently considering a direct sequel to Elden Ring. Speaking at the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024, where the game’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, won the Grand Award, Miyazaki explained, “We’re not really considering developments such as an Elden Ring 2.” However, he did leave room for potential future developments, adding that the Elden Ring IP may evolve “in some form in the future.”

This marks a shift in From Software’s approach, as Miyazaki had previously suggested the possibility of a sequel. In an interview earlier this year, he also ruled out the creation of a second Elden Ring expansion, preferring to focus on a single, expansive DLC rather than dividing content into multiple smaller pieces. He explained that this approach would better preserve the game’s sense of exploration and freedom.

Miyazaki, who is well-known for his work on Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, and Bloodborne, also mentioned that From Software is currently working on several new projects that span a variety of genres. While Miyazaki is overseeing some of these games, other projects are being directed by his colleagues.

Since its release in February 2022, Elden Ring has become From Software’s most commercially successful title, shipping over 25 million copies. The game’s success has generated interest in expanding its universe, including potential adaptations, such as a film. Reports have also indicated that Sony is in discussions to acquire From Software’s parent company, Kadokawa Corporation, which could lead to more opportunities for the Elden Ring franchise to grow in other media.

While a sequel to Elden Ring is not on the horizon at the moment, Miyazaki’s comments suggest that the world of Elden Ring may continue to evolve in some form, whether through additional expansions, spin-offs, or other creative endeavors.
