In a surprising move, Netflix has announced the closure of its Southern California game studio, known as Team Blue. This studio was one of several internal teams established by Netflix as part of its strategy to expand into the video game market.
Team Blue’s Vision for Gaming
Team Blue was created with the intent to redefine Netflix’s gaming approach, shifting from a mobile-centric strategy to a more expansive multi-device focus. The team aimed to develop a big-budget game that could be enjoyed across various platforms, signaling Netflix’s serious commitment to the gaming industry.
Key Talent Acquisition
Netflix made significant strides in assembling a talented roster for Team Blue:
- Chacko Sonny, former executive producer of Overwatch at Blizzard, joined the studio in late 2022. With experience in major franchises like Call of Duty and a history at Sony Santa Monica, Sonny was brought on board to lead the studio’s ambitious projects.
- Joseph Staten, a prominent creative lead from Microsoft’s Halo franchise, joined Team Blue in spring 2023. Staten was set to serve as the creative director for a new AAA multiplatform game and original intellectual property (IP), further underscoring Netflix’s serious intent in the gaming space.
- Rafael Grassetti, the former art director of the acclaimed God of War series at Sony Santa Monica, adding to the team’s impressive credentials.
Closure of Team Blue
Despite these promising developments, as of October 2024, Netflix has shut down Team Blue. All three high-profile hires are no longer with the company, confirming the abrupt end of this ambitious endeavor. This closure raises questions about Netflix’s future direction in the gaming landscape and its commitment to original game development.
As the company continues to navigate the evolving gaming industry, the shutdown of its AAA game studio serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by even the most determined players in the market.
