PlayStation 5

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s co-CEO has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to keeping consoles at the core of its business, despite expanding into PC and mobile gaming markets. In a recent interview with Nikkei, Hideaki Nishino, head of Sony’s Platform Business Group, highlighted that while mobile games often rely on ads and PC gaming setups can be complicated, the PlayStation offers a seamless experience. Once turned on, players can immediately enjoy the games they’ve purchased, and the PlayStation Store’s intuitive layout simplifies browsing for new titles.

Sony has been increasingly focused on reaching a broader audience by developing content for platforms beyond its consoles, including live service games released simultaneously on PS5 and PC. However, console users will continue to have early access to Sony’s flagship narrative-driven games, with PC releases following later. This strategy is aimed at enticing PC gamers to make the switch to PlayStation 5, as Sony sees significant growth potential without cannibalizing its existing console user base. The success of Helldivers 2, with a majority of its record-breaking sales coming from PC, demonstrates the strong demand on that platform.

Nishino emphasized that consoles are a unique technology stack built from the ground up to provide an exceptional gaming experience, and this will remain a central focus for PlayStation. He also believes that the expansion into PC and mobile gaming represents an opportunity for growth, with some PC gamers likely transitioning to consoles if they see the value PlayStation offers. This balanced approach allows Sony to grow its audience while continuing to prioritize its console players.
