Sony has officially introduced the PlayStation 5 Pro, which will launch on November 7 with a price of $700 in the U.S., £700 in the U.K., and €800 in Europe. The upgraded console comes with a 2TB SSD and a DualSense wireless controller, though the disc drive will be sold separately. The announcement, made by system architect Mark Cerny during a live stream, highlighted significant upgrades in GPU power, ray tracing, and AI-driven upscaling.
The PS5 Pro features a GPU with 67% more Compute Units than the current PlayStation 5 model, along with 28% faster memory. This combination results in 45% faster rendering, providing smoother gameplay experiences. Additionally, advanced ray tracing capabilities allow for light rays to be cast at double or triple the speed of the original PS5.
One of the standout innovations is PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, an AI-driven upscaling technology that enhances image clarity using machine learning. The PS5 Pro also debuts the PS5 Pro Game Boost feature, which affects over 8,500 backward-compatible PS4 games. This feature could enhance performance or stabilize gameplay for PS4 and PS5 titles, with certain PS4 games seeing improved image quality for higher resolution.
According to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino, the PS5 Pro was developed with dedicated gamers and game developers in mind, focusing on delivering high-fidelity graphics and smoother frame rates at 60FPS. A number of upcoming games will get free software updates to take full advantage of the PS5 Pro’s new capabilities, and these will carry a “PS5 Pro Enhanced” label.
Games taking advantage of the PS5 Pro’s capabilities include popular titles like Alan Wake 2, Demon’s Souls, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Gran Turismo 7, Hogwarts Legacy, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Horizon Forbidden West, and many more. The design of the PS5 Pro remains consistent with the existing PS5 lineup, maintaining the same height as the original model and the width of the refreshed version.
