Players can expect to complete Star Wars Outlaws in about 30 hours, according to the game’s creative director, Julian Gerighty. In an interview with VGC following the game’s reveal at Ubisoft Forward, Gerighty shared details on the game’s length and the development choices made along the way.
“We decided early on that this would be a 25 to 30-hour golden path adventure, with around 50 to 60 hours for those who want to experience everything,” Gerighty explained. “For someone with a family and a job, that’s still a significant commitment, but it’s not on the scale of an Assassin’s Creed epic, which can take up to 200 hours. This allows us to really focus on the details and manage the project with perhaps a smaller team.”
Gerighty also addressed whether the team at Massive was able to fully realize their original vision for the game or if certain elements had to be sacrificed.
“As a creator, I believe in setting a vision that’s exciting, ambitious, and achievable,” he said. “It’s crucial that everyone on the team is aligned and working towards the same goal. With The Division, The Division 2, and Star Wars Outlaws, our vision has been about 95% respected. A few things were changed or removed, but very little overall.”
One significant feature that was cut from the game was swimming. “In the early pitches, we wanted to include swimming, but it wasn’t feasible from an animation or scope perspective,” Gerighty admitted. “We decided we could live without it and focus on other areas. However, some features, like the mini-games—Sabacc and the arcade games—weren’t in the original plan but were added during development, so there’s been a bit of give and take.”
Star Wars Outlaws launches on August 30th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Three days of early access are available with the purchase of the Gold or Ultimate Edition, or through a Ubisoft+ Premium subscription.
