The House of the Dead : Remake Review #1
Review on The House of the Dead Remake!

THE FOLLOWING REVIEW MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS.
YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

The House of the Dead that was released by Sega back in 1996 got a full-blown remake for the last-gen and current-gen consoles while offering the same gameplay and the narrative sequences for the game. It does get improved visuals and comes with Horde mode, and difficulty levels too. Now, even though the game is back thanks to the developer MegaPixel Studio and the publisher Forever Entertainment, the game really has some performance issues.

The game begins with an agent that wants you to head into a mansion of Dr. Curien who is obsessed to find the nature of life and death and you’ve to put an end to his experiments and the spawned horde of zombies that you must go through. When I started, it felt more weird to me since it should provided context to the game which it refuses. Moreover, the writing and the voice acting are at the summit of quirky.

The controls for the PS4 are too much frustrating for me. The motion sensor function will automatically get enabled (this is based on my experience, don’t know about others) and whenever you to shoot at the enemies it just gets in the way, and just goes all over the place like having a seizures and then you end up dying. This has happened to me way too many times. Once it’s disabled, the aiming is bit frustrating since the camera and movement work is done automatically by the game, it’s a bit of a task to get the Dualshock 4 Gyroscope and the analog stick combo to help you move forward.

While the game can run smooth on the PS4, I did run into some performance issue. The game sometimes drops frames and at one point it just crashed. I was on Chapter 3 when Dr. Curien jumped down into the hole and the game just crashed, don’t know why that happened. The game doesn’t feel that big as well. You can finish the game in like 30 minutes because the enemies are easy to kill, but the controls on the PS4 just makes it harder to enjoy the game. One more thing to add, the game menu’s. One of the worst I might’ve even seen. The interface of the whole game is just bad.

The graphics have been modernized for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch versions for you to re-enjoy the 1996 classic game by Sega. But to be honest nothing has changed in gameplay, and story. One of the biggest additions in the remake it gets is the Horde mode for co-op. The only thing it does is add more of these creatures for more over-whelming experience which is just not properly done. The game remake is a faithful recreation but literally you’re just shooting the enemies for 30 minutes straight and then the game ends and it doesn’t really lived up to the expectation you know.

In the end, what do I think, while whether you should play the game or not is a decision that will made by you eventually, but in my opinion, it’s good for trophy hunting since the game isn’t big at all. The efforts by everyone is brilliant, but it didn’t lived-up to the expectations. It was a disappointment I would say.
