THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER. IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THE MOVIE, WE SUGGEST YOU TO NOT READ THIS REVIEW. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!
It’s been one hell of a ride for Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, from wanting to sit on the throne to rule to falling in love with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) to experiencing losses to watching his brother Loki’s neck getting snapped by the purple monster Thanos to wanting to protect and do the right thing, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor has come a long way. Thor looks and feels so different in this movie, which is kind of not a good thing and I will try to explain why as we begin with this review.
So, the movie begins with the Gorr walking in the deserted land carrying his daughter as she died because of starvation. He begs the god Rapu to help but since Rapu was just so disrespectful it changes Gorr’s mind as the Necrosword chooses him and Gorr kills Rapu and swores “All Gods will die”, and at that moment he became, “Gorr the God Butcher.” The downside of the Necrosword is that it corrupts people and it also holds the power to kill the Gods. To start the movie with the origin story of Gorr was the best and so was its story. Brilliant.
Then Korg our stone guy gives us a quick recap of Thor’s full story from Thor to Avengers Endgame, and how after the Endgame Thor was with the Guardians of the Galaxy and fought alongside them and how he loses weight and got in shape for battles. We see Thor meditating as well until Star-Lord asks Thor for help and the battle takes place only for Thor to single-handedly finish the whole fight in less than 2 minutes.

Thor: Love and Thunder is an okay movie, it failed to keep me excited for the movie because the movie just feels so comedic and how moments that are genuine or sadder, in the end, becomes comedic scene because Thor cracks a joke and that makes him look like an Idiot. In not all those moments, but in some of them, Thor should have shown leadership and seriousness to keep the balance. Thor Ragnarok movie which was also directed by Taika Waititi, there those comedic timings and seriousness were balanced and it worked and became such a huge hit because it showed how Thor uses humor to hide his pain and how instead of ruining a sad moment with jokes, it lets the scene continue the way it should and that worked very well for the movie.
The movie adapts the cancer storyline of Jane Foster and how she gets it no idea, at least if they had explained how she got that in the flashback would have worked. We see her undergoing Chemotherapy for Stage 4 Cancer. She is also now known as Dr. Jane Foster and wrote a book called “The Foster Theory” which explains how the rainbow bridge exists. But we learn that Chemotherapy has very little effect on her and has been experimenting or testing in her lab to find a solution to the treatment of cancer. She learns that Mjolnir might be the solution to cancer and goes to New Asgard to find the Mjolnir in small pieces when it was destroyed by Hela in Thor Ragnarok.
We then find out how Gorr has been killing the gods like Thor’s friend Falliger the Behemoth. But one would expect to see that fight of how Gorr defeated Falligar because it would be an amazing battle that’s for sure. We have only been told that Gorr has been killing gods, but all those kills are off-screen, on-screen he only kills Rapu and then fights Thor and his team in the Shadow Realm, Eternity, and New Asgard.

Gorr attacks New Asgard in an attempt to only kill Thor but take his Stormbreaker to open the gate to “Eternity.” Jane Foster becomes Mighty Thor as Thor in a flashback scene had asked Mjolnir to watch over Jane if something happens to her. Gorr kidnaps all the children of New Asgard and uses them as bait to get Thor to come and rescue and at that moment kill him and take his Stormbreaker.
Thor realizes that Gorr possesses an army and a Necrosword and that he, Jane, Korg, and Valkyrie aren’t enough to beat and need an army to defeat him. They head to Omnipotence City to seek help from Zeus, a God of lightning. Zeus makes a grand entry and a few seconds later Thor makes a request for an army to take the fight to Gorr but Zeus just rejects the request and gives several warnings to Thor to stop before Zeus just flicks and we get to see butt-ass naked Thor. A few seconds later, Zeus throws his Thunderbolt at Korg which destroys his body, and is left with a head since his whole body is made of rocks, in return Thor throws Zeus’s Thunderbolt through his chest leaving us to believe Thor just kill him only for the post-credits to ruin that he is alive and orders Hercules to kill Thor.
Now see the story doesn’t progress as properly or as fast as it should. The pacing of the story is really slow and kind of confusing, that’s what is wrong with the movie. The whole movie just feels like it lacked a story because to me it felt like a simple movie with not much to tell. They were hyping up Gorr as the greatest villain in the MCU but he is not. He is nowhere near as great as Thanos. The performance by Christian Bale was extraordinary in every scene he had, he killed it. But lack of screen time probably ruined his character.

The writing of the movie is a bit odd. Gorr the God Butcher who literally went on a God-killing spree, it’s strange that there are no fighting scenes of him killing gods except the Rapu, whereas Thor has a scene of killing God and not the Gorr, I don’t know it seems weird. More importantly, the movie felt like it lacked fighting scenes, there are scenes it’s not that but it should be more. The villain literally has less screen time which I don’t understand why his screen time was less considering we should be seeing him go on a rampage of killing gods.
Thor, Valkyrie, Jane, and Korg head to the Shadow Realm to rescue the kids only to find out it’s a trap set up by Gorr to kill them and take the Stormbreaker. Though he’s not successful in killing any of them, he was successful in stabbing Valkyrie from behind, Jane Foster who is Mighty Thor, we learn that Mjolnir instead of healing Jane it’s draining all the remaining strength in her to fight Cancer. When Thor finds out, he tells Jane to not use Mjolnir since she is not a super soldier like Captain America. If she uses it one more time, it will kill her.
Thor heads alone to fight Gorr and rescue the kids. He finds the kids and asks them to find something so that he can share his powers with them and stop those creatures while Thor focuses on getting the Stormbreaker and stopping Gorr. As Thor was about to get killed, Jane to the rescue and saved Thor. Both fight together and are successful in destroying the curse of Gorr by destroying the Necrosword.

We get to see Eternity for the first time and as Gorr was about to make a wish to kill all the existing gods, Jane as she was dying requests Gorr to not make that wish and instead choose to bring back his daughter which he did and go to hug her before he died. Jane in her final moment says goodbye to Thor and perishes away just like Odin as we see her in Valhalla. Thor takes care of Gorr’s daughter and in the end, we just see them fight together side by side before the movie ends.
In the end, I felt confused about what the movie is because the movie didn’t feel convincing because of the story, I think if it was like 3 to 4 hours long, then it would have reached its desired conclusion. Thor: Ragnarok still will be the best Thor movie ever but Love and Thunder might be the second worst movie in the Thor series.
