THE FOLLOWING REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE (2019). YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare which was released in 2019 might be the best Call of Duty game we got in recent years. Modern Warfare is a soft reboot by Activision and it’s actually a good soft reboot. Infinity Ward really did a good job with this game as the highlight of the game was the campaign. After such a long time, we got a better story in Call of Duty. There is a lot going on with this game that is good, bad, and plenty in between. Let’s get started with this review.

The story takes place in modern times and is set around a conflict rising between Russia and Urzikstan also involving Western Military forces. We play three characters, British SAS Sergeant Kyle, CIA SAC/SOG Officer Alex, and Urzikstani rebel leader Farah Karim. The three protagonists work together with SAS Captain Price and CIA Chief Kate Laswell with other allies that include the U.S Marine Corps General Lyon, Colonel Norris, and Demon Dogs leader Sergeant Marcus Griggs (later gets replaced by Demetrius Grosse).

These allied forces are fighting against Al-Qatala, a Urzikstan terrorist organization led by Omar “The Wolf” Sulaman, and his right hand Jamal “The Butcher” Rahar as well as General Roman Barkov, commander of a Russian faction who treats both Al-Qatala, and Farah’s rebel forces as criminals.

The story begins with CIA SAC/SOG Officer Alex and his team trying to recover shipments of chemical gas that are headed for Urzikstan but are intercepted by unknown hostiles who kill the Marines and escape with the gas. Laswell contacts Captain Price and requests him to help in recovering the gas. Alex is later sent to meet rebel leader Farah to get her to join forces in tracking the chemical in exchange for his aid to overthrow Russian forces led by General Roman Barkov.

Modern Warfare feels so good to play, the guns pack a real punch, and their recoil is realistic and meaningful. The audio work here is impressive, the sound of the guns is loud enough to feel like your ears are about to blow off. The guns animation is really good. I like how you can save the clip of the gun that hasn’t been completely used and replace it with another clip using the same hands. I also love how the scopes magnify at things you’re focused on. Wow!

The visuals of the game are just so incredible, I mean the attention to detail is so good, I played the campaign again just for the visuals and the story too. The environment they created for each level is just too good. However, when it comes to the story, it has a small campaign that wraps up in 6 hours or less which sounds disappointing, considering the fact that it has 14 missions, but it does have some amazing moments as well.

Captain Price gets a lot of screen time, which makes sense considering the fact that the whole game kinda revolves around him too. But apart from Captain Price, the three characters that we play, Farah only gets a backstory that is not memorable at all. The other two characters were good but not great to be remembered.

Modern Warfare throws you into some intense action fights that are paced out nicely. This game jumps into the roots of the original trilogy of Modern Warfare by giving us this game as more of a tactical gameplay experience.

Now let’s talk about the thing Call of Duty is great at doing. There are two modes on offer aside from the Campaign: Multiplayer Mode and Special Operations Mode. I did not enjoy playing Spec Ops mode, I don’t know why I didn’t like it but part of the reason is that the enemy waves. The more the enemy waves are, the more relentless the enemy’s squad is which will eventually overpower your squad. It was basically a continuation of the campaign but I guess it is the weaker part of the whole game.

The Multiplayer mode has maps that are literally big to accommodate 10 vs 10, 20 v 20, in the Ground War mode, and 32 v 32 matches. These maps have some fantastic hiding spots meaning that you’re very much not safe in these modes. I’m, to be honest very bad in Multiplayer mode because of how smooth shooting, and lightning-fast gameplay Call of Duty has on offer. They did include some small additions like you can mount your guns on walls and on surfaces to increase accuracy.

In the end, the presentation of Call of Duty was good. It’s easily one of the best games we got to play in recent years with the single-player campaign being the highlight of the game, Spec Ops was a letdown considering the fact that I had hopes that it might be a better mode, but it isn’t. Overall, it was a fun game to play.

8/10
